‚Urbanized’ Cityprojections (Miastoprojekcje)

The third episode of the ‚Miastoprojekcje’ film series will take part next Wednesday, 8 January at 7 p.m. at the City Culture Institute. ‚Urbanized’ by Gary Hustwit will be screened. The movie will be discussed by dr Hubert Bilewicz, a teacher of the University of Gdańsk and Jacek Dominiczak, a professor of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk.

 ‚MIASTOPROJEKCJE’ is a series of film meetings preceded by short opening lectures and ended by discussions with the viewers and the guests invited. The series was initiated by the screening of ‚The Human Scale’ at the end of ‚The Square Quarrel’ initiative when the Institute encouraged people to express their opinions and take part in the activities at Targ Węglowy.

During the next meeting of ‚Miastoprojekcje’ we will screen the following films: ‚The Two-Headed Dragon’, ‚Megacities’, ‚Detropia’, ‚The Pruitt Igoe Myth’, and ‚The Venice Syndrome’.

At the beginning of the 19th Century, no more than 30 millions of people lived in cities which was 2,5 percent of all people in the world. During the next 100 years, the number of humans reached 2 billions. According to the World Bank, nearly half of all the people live in cities nowadays. It is estimated that by 2030 the number will be higher than 60 percent. The urbanization may turn into slums if the country people migration will not meet an appropriate development policy and the interest of authorities and citizens.

Hubert Bilewicz: history of arts professional, university teacher, educational activist. He works at the Institute of Art History of the University of Gdańsk. Among other issues, he is involved in research on the school of Sopot and the artistic society in Gdańsk after 1945. He is especially interested in various (artistic and non artistic) contexts of art. He was a co-supervisor of the last edition of the visual arts festival ‚Alternativa’ in Gdańsk.

Jacek Dominiczak: an architect and a professor of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk where he runs the Studio for Interior City Design. Since 2004, he is a partner of INTERCULT in Stockholm. During the partnership, he took part in 12 artistic and research European projects: SEAS and CORNERS. Since 2005, he is a partner of the international project of the Exterior Gallery of Gdańsk run by the Center for Modern Art ‚Łaźnia’ in Gdańsk. He is a beneficiary of the Fulbright Program (1991) and the Kościuszko Foundation (1992).
